UW-Stevens Point to begin search for chancellor

A committee of 19 faculty, staff and student representatives was appointed Tuesday to begin the extensive “search and screening” process to select a successor for University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Chancellor Linda Bunnell.

UW System President Kevin Reilly appointed the committee members based off nominations from faculty and staff.

The chair of the committee will be professor Neil Heywood of UW-Stevens Point’s geography and geology department, according to a statement.

According to UW System spokesperson David Giroux, the available position of chancellor is made known nationwide. Letters are sent to potential nominees and ads are placed in publications.

“The job of the committee is to go and recruit applicants, screen them and advance a slate of five finalists,” Giroux said. “Then they will present them to Kevin Reilly and a small committee of the Board of Regents and they will agree on the slate.”

He added the five finalists chosen will come to the UW-Stevens Point campus to take part in public events, presentations and interviews.

When searching for a potential chancellor, the university will create a detailed website giving specifics about the position, what the university is looking for and key initiatives the university is focusing on.

The website also details who is on the search committee, the process timeline for conducting the search, how to make nominations for the position and how to contact the committee for further questions.

“The search and screening of applicants will be similar to the process UW had in appointing Biddy Martin to chancellor in 2008,” Giroux said.

The special committee of regents that will review the five finalists chosen by the committee will be chaired by Regent Judy Crain of Green Bay. Mark Bradley of Wausau, Eileen Connolly-Keesler of Neenah and Jos? V?squez of Milwaukee will also be a part of the committee, according to the release.

Crain and Reilly will officially call the search and screen committee together Oct. 28 to outline their role, mission and review procedures in detail as the committee begins their search and evaluation of potential candidates, according to the statement.
