University of Wisconsin Dean of Students Lori Berquam gave her support to WSUM 91.7 potentially managing a soundstage at the Mifflin Street Block Party Saturday afternoon.

Berquam said she met with WSUM administrative program manager Dave Black and WSUM station manager Jenny Underwood late last week where both indicated their interest in holding a soundstage at Mifflin.

“What I understood, and WSUM indicated to me, they want to host a sound stage at the event but not sponsor the event. … I think it’s a nice show of support,” Berquam said.

Berquam added she has no reservations with WSUM potentially participating in the event, adding the radio station does not really need the university’s approval.

“I think that’s a great partnership: WSUM hosting a sound stage and providing music entertainment, maybe some DJs or a band,” Berquam said. “If [the Wisconsin Union Directorate] sponsored another soundstage or another part of event that is fine too, but I think the event should be sponsored by residents of Mifflin.”

WUD decided not to sponsor the Mifflin Street Block Party, citing lack of time and funding.

Sponsoring an event as large as Mifflin is a huge responsibility and all liability would be placed on the university, Berquam said.

Just as the university does not sponsor Freakfest, the university should not sponsor Mifflin, Berquam said, adding sponsoring to the event would have huge ramifications against the university.

“Any group who sponsors the actual event is responsible for all city guidelines and actually having a neighborhood party … that’s what has to happen in every case of Mifflin,” Berquam said.

Verveer declined to comment on the potential plan regarding the Mifflin Street Block Party until plans are finalized by the city.

More details on the party are expected sometime Monday.
