A Madison Metro bus and a small car were involved in a crash on the corner of South Bassett and Main streets Monday night.

Two people were transported to a local hospital after paramedics and Madison police arrived at the scene.

Roshan Mahemdran, the manager at Sadhana Wine Shop at 41 S. Bassett St., said he heard a loud bang and could immediately tell there had been some sort of accident.

“I came outside, and all I could hear was some lady screaming and I saw some debris,” Mahemdran said. “I thought it was a biker at first.”

Police received a call just before 6 p.m. and responded to the scene. The intersection was blocked off to traffic for about an hour and a half.

The passenger side door of the car was impacted, and police officers were sweeping glass from the car windows off the street.

Madison Police Department Sgt. Jennifer Krueger Favour said people were exiting the bus when they arrived. The people from the car were conscious when they were transported to the hospital, she added.

The cause of the crash and who was at fault is yet to be determined.

“In any motor vehicle crash, there could be tickets issued to people who are in violation of traffic laws,” Krueger Favour said. “At this point, I don’t know who was at fault.”

Krueger Favour said police handle accidents involving Madison Metro differently because it is a business, and a supervisor is called to survey the situation.

A Metro supervisor was on the scene taking notes and talking with police.

Mahemdran said when he first came out of the wine shop, he did not see anything on fire and saw a number of people on their cell phones calling 911.

“Honestly, it was really good response time by the cops and the paramedics,” Mahemdran said.

Residents of the area stood on their front porches, took pictures and watched as the injured people were carried away in the ambulance and the car was towed away.
