ASM finishes election do-over

The Associated Students of Madison Student Election Commission released preliminary ratified results of its second fall elections Thursday night. The first ASM election was scrapped due to a technical error in the vote-counting procedure.

Eyal Halamish and Ashok Kumar won the two open freshman-representative seats with 547 votes and 529 votes, respectively. The nearest other candidate was Kelly Egan with a count of 294.

Catherine D. Quinn won the open position in the Student Services Finance Committee with 1,709 votes. The next-nearest candidate was Adam Schlicht with 164 votes.

Both referenda — dealing with student segregated fees — passed, receiving more than 60 percent of the vote on both occasions. One of the referenda will make constitutional the application of state and federal laws and court decisions in respect to the allocation of segregated fees; this will allow reviews of decisions, among other things. The other referenda stated that a possibly outdated part of the ASM constitution — which states that no student service without allocated student fees during one fiscal year may be added to the SSFC budget for the next fiscal year except by a two-thirds vote of SSFC — would be removed.

SEC chair Marissa Courey said procedures creating difficulty in the first election were well-monitored by the UW Department of Information Technologies during this one, and there were not as many write-in ballots, which made tallying ballots a much simpler process.

“It feels good to be done,” Courey said.
