Former UW hockey star charged with vehicular homicide

Former University of Wisconsin hockey star Dany Heatley was charged with vehicular homicide Monday after the death of his Atlanta Thrashers teammate, who died Sunday night of head injuries caused by an accident in which Heatley was driving.

Heatley’s participation in the season is suspended “indefinitely,” according to team general manager Don Waddell.

Police said Heatley was driving at an “extremely high rate of speed” when he crashed into a concrete pillar Sept. 29, splitting his Ferrari in two and hurling 25-year-old Dan Snyder from the car.

Police are unsure as to whether alcohol was involved in the accident.

If convicted, Heatley could be sentenced to anywhere between one and 15 years in prison.
