Madison woman dies after injuries from skiing

A Madison resident died Saturday at Tyrol Basin Ski Hill from internal bleeding after falling.

Bao Vang, 19-year old from Madison, was skiing for only the second time. Vang swerved to avoid other skiers and struck a ridged snow bank, causing her to lose her balance and fall on her back, according to a report by the Dane County sheriff.

Deputies from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Medical Technicians from the Mount Horeb District received an emergency call at 8:27 p.m. and arrived at Tyrol Basin, where the hill’s ski patrol was administering first aid.

Vang was transported to the University of Wisconsin Hospital’s emergency room, where she was pronounced dead.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office said it is still investigating the accident and that there appears to be no involvement of alcohol or foul play.

“It was a big shock to us,” said Don McKay, general manager of Tyrol Basin said of Vang’s death. “She fell while skiing, which is a fairly common occurrence.”

McKay said the ski patrol responded quickly, and while it was clear Vang was injured, she was conscious, reasonably alert and answering the questions the patrol was asking her.

McKay said Tyrol Basin has never had a fatal ski accident before.

“It has been a very sad day for all of us, and we have great sympathy for the family,” McKay said.

McKay said skiers and snowboarders understand when hitting the slopes, sometimes the slopes hit back.

“Skiing and snowboarding are outdoor adventure sports. After all, you are sliding down a steep snowy hill on sticks,” McKay said. “While we never expect a tragedy like this, we all understand there are risks involved.”

The sheriff’s office was not able to confirm if Vang was a University of Wisconsin student. Her name, however, is listed on the UW directory. McKay said Vang was at the hill with about two other people, one of which he believed to be her sister.

Tyrol Basin is a small ski hill in the Mt. Horeb area, about 20 miles west of Madison, and is often frequented by UW students.
