Sexual scavenger hunt spells trouble for ASU student government

The executive vice president of student government at Arizona State University may have put a lot of work into a campus-based pornographic video, but during his tenure he failed to learn ASU’s policies regarding public sexuality and is now paying the price. Brian Buck will be among those disciplined for participating in the production of a pornographic video, which included film of sex on a campus lawn, porn stars and a sexual scavenger hunt.

The video, “Shane’s World #29: Frat Row Scavenger Hunt 3,” featured members of the Kappa Sigma, Sigma Nu, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Theta Chi fraternities. The production included a shower scene with Buck.

The sexual scavenger hunt made use of sex toys and other assorted objects and included scenes on a public campus lawn and the front of a residence hall. There were two teams involved in the hunt. Each included two women and also members of the fraternities. Points were awarded for sexual acts, and the team with the most points won the hunt.

Members of the student body’s executive committee say they feel the video is not a big deal and do not expect any leadership changes.

Kappa Sigma, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Theta Chi have chapters at the University of Wisconsin. Lance Putnam, an alumnus of the Theta Chi fraternity at UW said the acts are not reflective of fraternities in general.

“I’m shocked,” Putnam said. “We have an alcohol-free house. We promote community service. People remember the negative things like that, and when individuals talk about fraternities, they only talk about the negatives. I’m not very pleased.”

ASU officials learned of the video in July and said it violates the school’s code of conduct. The ASU code of conduct explicitly states that prohibited conduct includes “engaging in any sexual offense, including but not limited to, sexual assault, public sexual indecency or indecent exposure.”

Ed Mirecki, the fraternity and sorority advisor at UW, said the magnitude of punishment depends on the video’s contents.

“Is this truly consensual?” Mirecki asked. “Was there sexual harassment or assault? That should be the question. There was this big issue in Florida where a fraternity video taped an erotic dancer, and she alleged sexual assault, but they had it on video.”

Officials from the national headquarters of Kappa Sigma and Sigma Phi Epsilon declined comment, saying there was an investigation into the matter underway. Dave Westol, executive director of Theta Chi’s international headquarters, said those involved in the incident would be disciplined.

The Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter at Baylor University in Texas is also under investigation because of members who posed in Playboy. Baylor officials said the magazine runs contrary to the school’s ideals, and they have threatened to expel any student posing in the magazine. The Baylor issue is slated for publication Oct. 12.

Westol said that when the investigation concludes, a recommendation will be made to Theta Chi’s Risk Management and Standards Committee where a decision on the punishment will be made.

“We are working with the university on this matter, and we certainly share in the disappointment with the chapter and the members involved,” Westol said.
