UW-Madison freshman Kelly Steinborn, who was diagnosed with a rare case of bacterial meningitis, is still in intensive care.
Steinborn, a resident of Sellery Hall, remained in serious condition at Meriter Hospital, 202 S. Park St., over the weekend. She has been in intensive care for four days.
A Meriter nurse said Steinborn is “doing better, but is still in our care, in intensive care.”
No new cases of bacterial meningitis have been reported in Madison. An outbreak is unlikely, according to health officials.
University Health Services clinical services director Scott Spear said Steinborn’s variety of meningococcal disease can only be spread through saliva or direct personal contact, so classmates and acquaintances need not worry. In a precautionary move by UHS, which is no longer handling Steinborn’s case, several of the victim’s close relatives and friends received Cipro antibiotics.
