Several UW-Madison graduate programs rank high on the newly released U.S. News and World Report annual report. The schools of education, biological sciences, chemistry and engineering all earned high marks in the graduate school rankings.

The graduate school's interim dean, Martin Cadwallader, said the report accurately reflects the pride UW has in its graduate programs.

“Graduate education continues to be a major strength of UW-Madison, as indicated by many measures,” Cadwallader said.

The magazine does not survey every discipline each year it publishes rankings, but this year's ranks were drawn from new data.

Cadwallader warned against potential students placing too much weight on national ranking systems like this one, though.

“We believe that prospective graduate students should consider many factors, not just rankings, in selecting the program that best fits their goals,” he said. “UW-Madison is a great choice, and our graduate students are making major contributions to our research and education mission.”

Some of the rankings include:

–Applied Mathematics, 14th, tied with Northwestern, Rice University and University of Washington.

-Biological Sciences, 12th, tied with Duke University.

-Chemistry, 8th, tied with Columbia University and Cornell University of New York.

-Education, 6th.

-Engineering, 15th, tied with Penn State University-University Park.

-Law, 25th, tied with Boston University, George Washington University, University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign, University of Washington and Washington University (St. Louis).

The magazine previously ranked UW 32nd among national universities offering doctoral programs.
