State Street redesign under consideration

A consultant for the $15 million redesign of State Street will unveil his plans Monday night at the Madison Civic Center.

The new plans include a complete overhaul of street décor, new streets and sidewalk surfaces, lowered curbs and wider walkways.

The new plan will bring a more “traditional” look to streetlights, benches, trashcans, kiosks and signs.

A line of street lights and new trees of various species, fed by an irrigation system, will separate a “flex zone” of bus shelters and bike racks from the pedestrian zone near State Street businesses.

An interesting aspect of the new design includes red granite bands along the sidewalk inscribed with quotes and images that future generations can add to.

Ignacio Bunster-Ossa, a principal with design firm Wallace, Roberts and Todd, said the design aims to give State Street and surrounding areas a “timeless” look.

The design also incorporates changes to Elizabeth Link Peace Park, the Mifflin and Carroll street parks separating State Street from the Capitol Square, and Concrete Park, located between the Towers and Statesider private residence halls.

Designers will present the plans Nov. 20 to City Council, where they will be sent to various committees for consideration. City officials expect the council to take action on the plans in January or February 2002.

Bunster-Ossa’s presentation will be held in the Marquee Room of the Madison Civic Center at 7:00 p.m.
