The Badgers opened the Big Ten season with an impressive win over the Michigan State Spartans and now UW will look ahead to Saturday’s battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe. Here is what we learned about this Wisconsin team from Saturday’s performance.??
1. Scott Tolzien is one of the best QBs in the Big Ten
No one has played better quarterback in the conference up to this point. Nobody. Tolzien is making all the throws and he is limiting mistakes. The Junior quarterback is getting all of his?receivers?involved and he has been terrific in the red zone. The rest of the QBs in the conference have looked pretty shaky as Darryl Clark and Kirk Cousins had awful outings.?
2. John Clay can carry the load
Despite receiving heavy criticism after his three-fumble performance last week, Clay responded with his first 30-plus carry game. He racked up over 140 yards and kept the ball off the ground. The bruising back proved to the this coaching staff and this team that he can be a workhorse for this offense.
3. This defense can contain an opponent’s top threat
MSU wide?receiver?Blair White came into Saturday’s game with 22 receptions on the year, and he left with 23. The Wisconsin secondary only allowed White, one of the Big Ten’s top?receivers, to catch a single ball. The ability to eliminate a dangerous receiver will be needed this Saturday, for the Badgers will now have to deal with Minnesota’s Eric Decker.
