State Street’s worn sidewalks hold the fond memories of countless Badgers.

Be it the raucous debauchery of Freakfest or simply a weekend stroll past the storefronts, the beloved thoroughfare is inextricably linked with the University of Wisconsin experience.

Throwback Thursday: Agricultural Hall from Linden Drive, 1927

But once upon a time, the street wasn’t so university-oriented. Where students purchase pizza and rolling papers today was once home to more sober commerce, with banks, merchants and tradesmen lining State Street from Bascom to the Capitol.
