On latest EP, Fetty Wap returns with pervading mediocrity, exhausted themes

The Jersey rapper’s ‘For My Fans’ just shows that dollar signs have blinded him

It seems that Fetty Wap has entered a new chapter — he’s switched out “1738” for the new phrase, “Zoo Gang.”

The 24-year-old New Jersey rapper uses a variation of the phrase four times in the first verse of “Z O O” alone. The title of his new EP, For My Fans, should be taken literally. Only dedicated Fetty Wap fans will be able to sit through another EP of tired themes and mediocre musicality.

Themes of money, women and liquor populate nearly every line of every song. Fetty Wap has not only refused to come out of his limited comfort zone, but has seemingly made it even smaller. He takes a one-line break from the lyrical gasconade to tell listeners “because of you guys, I do what the fuck I want / it feels fucking good, man,” in the opening track, “Ferrari Music.”

One of the only redeeming qualities of the EP is the fact that three of the five songs are freestyles, where Fetty had to come up with the lyrics on the spot.

Instrumentals on the EP are just as undistinguished and predictable; one can expect a slow, synth heavy start to explode into a bass boosted banger before the songs even begin. This recipe seems to have worked for Fetty thus far — it’s probably understandable why he hasn’t switched up his act.

On this latest, second-rate EP, the wealthy Fetty Wap half-sung and half-rapped about the very same themes he has always relied upon. He appears to be simultaneously enjoying himself and raking in quite a decent amount of money. Expect nothing more until the dollars stop flowing. Still, becoming intoxicated off one’s own monetary successes rarely sustains the artistic innovation to make a lasting name for oneself. We’ll see how far Fetty’s dollars can really take him.

There are few reasons for listeners to pay attention to Fetty’s For My Fans. It’s seemingly reserved for his religious followers — those yearning to hear Fetty Wap’s voice, or those impressed as to how in the world he could release multiple projects in just over two months. Still, with the type of quality he’s putting out, Fetty Wap should probably start considering just how long his faithful followers will hold out.
