University Health Services is reminding students to be sure they have had a full dose of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, as new cases of mumps have been reported on campus.

Three University of Wisconsin students have been recently diagnosed with the mumps, according to a statement from UHS.

The statement said the cases are not connected, and UHS is monitoring the outbreak. Mumps, a viral disease, is spread through the air or by contact with saliva. Symptoms usually occur 16 to 18 days after infection.

Mumps symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches and fatigue often followed by swelling of the cheek and jaw area. Students experiencing these symptoms should make an appointment at UHS immediately, the statement said.

The statement said students with mumps should isolate themselves for five days after symptoms begin and there is no specific treatment for the virus. UHS epidemiologist Craig Roberts said in the statement that mumps patients are usually healthy again within a week or two.
