Despite the difficult, windy conditions at Dan McClimon Memorial Track Saturday, junior Tara Clack was able to adjust to the circumstances and set a new UW record in the pole vault.
With a vault of 12 feet 7-1/2inches, Clack provisionally qualified for nationals and looks to score an automatic bid next weekend in LaCrosse, Wis. Clack’s vault breaks the outdoor mark of 12-0 set by Christine Baudry last year.
Clack vaulted a UW record 12-6 the weekend before in LaCrosse, but due to inclement weather the competition was moved inside, and thus Clack’s mark was barred as a NCAA provisional qualifier.
Clack came close to clearing a height of over 13 feet but was unsuccessful. Nevertheless, Clack currently ranks second in the Big Ten, with the conference championships to be held in Madison one week from Friday.
Other notables in the pole vault include UW senior Shana Martin, who finished second to Clack with a vault of over 11 feet and 1/4 inch. For the Madison native, this was Martin’s last meet held at home. UW freshman Andrea Lopez finished fourth with a vault of 10 feet and 1/2 inch.
Clack was not the only Badger to break school records Saturday, as senior Cathy Ross and sophomore Bree Fuqua achieved new UW records in their respective events.
Ross broke her own UW record in the triple jump, finishing first in the event with a mark of 42-2 1/4. Her previous best of 41-11 1/2 was set earlier this season on April 5th at the Duke Invitational. Ross’ jump provisionally qualifies her for nationals and currently ranks her first in the Big Ten.
Bree Fuqua broke the 19-year old school record in the shot put with a throw of 51-5 1/2. Her record mark placed her first in the competition and put her second in the Big Ten. Her throw also provisionally qualifies Fuqua for the NCAA outdoor championships. Fuqua broke the old UW mark of 50-10 3/4 set by Karen Nitsch in 1983.
