Students with cars parked on area streets may have been greeted with a fine this morning due to emergency parking regulations enforced over the weekend as Wisconsin saw the biggest snowfall of the season.
After months of unseasonably warm weather, the National Weather Service said seven inches of snow had fallen on Madison as of late Saturday night.
The storm dumped over a foot in some areas of the state, and Milwaukee saw a record-setting 9.4 inches on Saturday.
Companies whose operations rely on snowfall reported increased business over the weekend, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Nan Adams, manager at Kitz & Pfeil True Value Hardware in Oshkosh, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the store opened a half-hour early on Sunday.
“The telephone was ringing when I walked in the door, so I knew they were waiting,” she said. ” We probably sold more shovels today than we did all season.”
A crash Friday night in Crawford County killed Russell M. Steiner, 40, of Prairie du Chien when his pickup truck slid into a ditch.
Saturday night, a tour bus driving to Chicago from a casino in Milwaukee rolled over on Interstate 94 in southern Milwaukee County. About a dozen passengers were treated for minor injuries sustained in the rollover.

Madison city officials declared a snow emergency Saturday and police officers handed out numerous parking tickets to cars not complying with the city’s parking laws Saturday and Sunday night.
During a snow emergency, alternate side parking restrictions are in effect for the entire city, including the Downtown/Isthmus Snow Emergency Zone, which runs from Thornton Ave. on the northeast to Park St. and Proudfit St. on the southwest and from Lake Mendota to Lake Monona.
Free parking is available during snow emergencies at all downtown parking ramps, but cars must be removed by 7 a.m.
Overnight parking fines in the Snow Emergency Zone are $20. Outside the zone, tickets for alternate-side parking violations are $10.
The National Weather Service predicts a chance of snow showers today with temperatures reaching the high teens.
