Explosive materials found on North Brooks Street

Madison police arrested a Wauwatosa man for the possession of an explosive device after receiving a call Friday afternoon.

Police entered an apartment on the 10 block of North Brooks Street Friday after being called to investigate suspicious material, Madison police spokesperson Joel DeSpain said. The police report said officers inspected the apartment and explosive material was found inside of the apartment. Police then arrested Andrew Cockerham, 20.

A search warrant was authorized and police seized all suspicious materials from the apartment. Police said the explosives pose no ongoing threat to the community.

DeSpain said police have an idea of what type of device was found in the apartment, but officials are still working with FBI to analyze the confiscated material.

He also said police took extra precautions in the situation and called for assistance from the Dane County Bomb Squad and FBI. He added that police even consulted military experts on explosives before handling the material.

DeSpain said he has seen some bomb-related activity in the area before, it is still uncommon in Madison. He said he has seen pipe bombs and other devices of the sort but even those are very rare occurrences.
