Friday, we printed the story of a University of Wisonsin-Madison couple competing in Sunday's Ironman competition. After the grueling 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run, super-seniors Vanessa Hensey and Matt Krippner were understandably spending today recuperating, but Vanessa stifled her yawns this afternoon to talk to The City Within.
Vanessa and Matt both finished the race after just over 14 hours. In fact — get ready for the ‘aw, shucks’ moment — they crossed the finish line together, holding hands.
Vanessa's knee had given out halfway through the marathon portion of the race, but the couple stuck together and power-walked to the finish.
The roughest part of the race occurred afterwards, Vanessa said, when she passed out as she was being congratulated by her family and friends. She was suffering from dehydration (she lost seven pounds over the course of the race), but a stint with an IV in the medical tent revived her.
She'll soon be coming up with another challenge for herself, despite Matt's pleas to take it easy for a year, although she has no idea what it will be.
"I'll think of something," she said.
