Terrace closures ensue longevity of UW’s historic gem

Although students may miss this campus destination, it is only temporary

The iconic chairs are going away early this year.

The Memorial Union Terrace closed this week, and is not set to reopen until summer 2016 due to major renovations. These changes are upsetting to many University of Wisconsin students, but the changes are necessary.

As we move forward with the 2015-16 academic year, we must realize the absence of our beloved terrace is not permanent. The completion of the project will only enhance our UW experience.

Memorial Union renovations will bring temporary closures, relocations, sub shops

The Memorial Union Reinvestment (MUR) project is a multiphase renovation program that addresses the need to update and maintain the heavily used infrastructure. In addition, MUR seeks to add services that will make the Union easily accessible to all.

Instead of expressing disappointment and dismay, we should recognize that because of the MUR project, the Union is here to stay for many years to come.

After the completion of Phase I, which included renovating the Wisconsin Union Theater and adding space for Wisconsin Hoofers, they will now move to Phase II. This requires the temporary closure of the Terrace, as well as the iconic Der Rathskeller (but the seating area will remain open) to update concrete and dining areas.

For some students, the Terrace has never been under construction during their time at UW. For others, their first year experience will be lacking a fundamental and special campus landmark. However, these renovations will be worthwhile.

MUR is an investment in the Wisconsin Experience. It is an investment in our community, and it is a project that ensures the longevity of our remarkable and historic campus. We will soon enjoy the benefits of MUR, but for now, we must be patient.

Especially now, with the warm weather, it is upsetting to think we will not be able to sit in our favorite sunburst chairs and enjoy the view of Lake Mendota. But the Terrace is undergoing these renovations not only for us, but also for future members of the UW community.
