University of Wisconsin Police Department said Friday that they have found no evidence that a reported sexual assault near Memorial Union April 8 occurred.
In a statement released Friday afternoon, UWPD said that after reviewing video footage, phone logs, conducting interviews and canvassing the area, they found no evidence of the sexual assault. The 23-year-old woman who reported the incident told police she had been sexually assaulted at knife point by three men that night.
The victim was unable to describe her assailants to investigators, and police “believe it is highly likely the woman was referring to a previous traumatic incident” which occurred some years before, according to the statement. UWPD said they believe there is no active threat to campus based on the reported event.
UWPD spokesperson Marc Lovicott said the investigation will remain open until the victim decides it should be closed.
