Hundreds of freshmen Badgers can now cross the “Battle of Bascom” off their Bucky lists after they took part in the traditional campus rivalry Sunday.
“There was a lot of hype coming into this,” Matt Brinza, a freshman from Sellery Hall, said. “I heard about this over the summer, and thought that if I’m not there, I might as well not even call myself a Badger. This is an important tradition.”
While most students were lighthearted about the campus rivalry — which pits students living in the Southeast side of campus against those in Lakeshore — some demonstrated strong allegiances to their respective sides.
“It’s really important for Southeast to assert their dominance over Lakeshore at the battle of Bascom Hill,” Brinza said.

After the event kicked off, students from opposing sides began chucking snowballs toward each other, with some bringing dining hall trays to shield themselves from the impact. The two neighborhoods mostly maintained their distance, although the battle heated up when the two sides edged closer to one another.

As the event has become tradition, hordes of students continue to show up for snowball fights, such as the 2011 event where more than 1,000 students gathered for a snowball fight when UW canceled classes.
This year, conditions were tame and at times difficult for snowball making. With temperatures hovering in the upper 20’s and the snow melting, some students took advantage of the mild winter weather.
“It was drizzling a little bit earlier, and the snow doesn’t stick together too well, but it’s still really fun,” UW freshman Aaron Faubel said. “I’m crossing it off the Bucky list.”
