The track, basketball courts and fitness area of the Camp Randall Sports Center will remain closed through Monday after last Sunday’s outdated pipe burst resulted in flooding throughout the facility.

The ice arena was the only portion of the Shell that was approved by state and campus risk management officials to reopen Thursday, Director of Recreational Sports John Horn said.

Issues caused by the flooding have delayed the start of intramural hockey until Sept. 30, Horn said.

There was no leak in the domestic water line to the building, only a smaller line serving some of the fire sprinklers in an unoccupied portion of the building, Bill Elvey, director of University of Wisconsin Facilities, Planning and Management said in an email to The Badger Herald.

The track surface will need to be restored to a level elevation, Elvey said. The basketball surface may require a complete replacement but further study is required to determine this, he said.

Elvey said Rec Sports will give an update on the status of the Shell on Monday around 2 p.m. State and campus tests regarding damage to the facility will be conducted this weekend, Elvey said.
