University of Wisconsin Police Department officers responded to a report of a bicyclist who had crashed on the Temin Lake Shore Path Friday afternoon, and the man was later pronounced dead.
According to a UWPD statement, officers were alerted of the incident at 2:48 p.m. At the time, they were notified that a cyclist on the Lake Shore Path was bleeding and might not be breathing, the statement said.
Ald. Scott Resnick, District 8, said from the early stages of the investigation, it is suggested that the biker had a preexisting condition that caused a medical emergency on the path.
When officers arrived, bystanders aided in their efforts to save the cyclist’s life and helped perform CPR and use a defibrillator on the individual, the statement said.
The statement said Madison Fire Department paramedics made continued efforts to save the biker’s life when they arrived on the scene shortly after UWPD officers.
The cyclist was then taken to the UW Hospital Emergency Department where he were pronounced dead, according to the statement.
Resnick said this is a fairly rare occurrence but added that medical emergences can happen anywhere and any time.
“I extend the deepest sympathy and condolences to the family,” Resnick said.
Resnick said there could be several, if any, days that pass before more details or information about the incident will be released.
