Two 20-year-old University of Wisconsin students were robbed at gunpoint in a parking lot outside a residence on University Avenue Wednesday night.
The victims were walking along the 1900 block of University Avenue around 11:30 p.m. when one of the two suspects pointed a handgun at the
victims and demanded some of their property, according to Madison Police Department spokesperson Joel DeSpain. The suspects obtained both of the victims wallets, cell phones and an iPod touch, DeSpain said.
Both suspects were black males between the ages of 18 and 20 and
were wearing dark clothes, DeSpain said. He added the victims reported both men smelled of
marijuana.
DeSpain said the victims were not physically harmed.
DeSpain said people should always remain
vigilant in city streets, but these particular victims did not put
themselves in an unsafe position.
“These two particular victims didn’t do anything to
make themselves more vulnerable,” DeSpain said.
DeSpain said the victims did everything they should have done by giving the robbers what they wanted.
The suspects fled the scene on foot and are still at large, DeSpain said.
The armed robbery is one of three incidents reported in the campus area over the past week, according to a UW statement.
