The Student Services Finance Committee would like a series of bylaws to be passed that allows SSFC to remove members who do not attend enough meetings, threaten other representatives or commit wrongdoings.
Currently, without these bylaws, it is required that SSFC propose the removal of a member to the Associated Students of Madison Student Council, which meets every two weeks. SSFC Chair Brandon Williams said the committee was looking over their bylaws and noticed no way for SSFC to internally remove people.
“This procedure would be done only under the most extreme situations,” Williams said. “They probably shouldn’t be on the committee in the first place.”
With this current process, the member threatened with removal would still be on the board until the meeting with the council, which could cause serious problems, according to Student Council Rep. Matthew Manes.
According to Manes, SSFC would like some sort of permanent process that allows them to remove members who pose problems immediately.
“In order to even bring this forward they would need a full third of the committee (to agree). Seven out of nine members would need to feel that they should be removed,” Manes said.
Williams said council representatives recommended immediately following SSFC rulings, the council should have the opportunity to overturn the rule.
“Some people feel threatened, but there is a sense of debate that happens, that I think is very important. A difference in viewpoints in terms of the way the debate happens on SSFC, I think, is important,” said council Rep. Katrina Flores.
This motion was sent back to the SSFC for further review.
Williams said if he were to bring it back to the council it would come with significant changes, including removing ambiguity in its wording and creating a clause stipulating the allowance for the council to overrule SSFC’s decisions.
“I would like to see it brought back, but it might not be applied until 17th session (starting in May 2010),” Williams added.
ASM Finance Chair Matt Beemsterboer also discussed at the meeting that this semester they will try to create a more concise and accurate place for information about student funding for student-run organizations on campus.
Legislative Affairs Committee Chair Adam Johnson spoke about simplifying Free Application for Federal Student Aid and finding better ways to make people more eligible. He said they want to make it possible for high school seniors to get a hold of their tax data so they can compare financial aid packages when applying to colleges.
Additionally, Beemsterboer spoke on behalf of SSFC, which decided to approve Kappa Alpha Psi’s grant for a Pre-Halloween All Campus Concert.
ASM resolved to approve the concert and allot $13,752 toward its production.
“This event is a more wholesome activity compared to the other Halloween activities that occur on campus,” Beemsterboer said.
