University of Wisconsin announced Monday the four finalists for a position as executive director of University Health Services for the fall semester.
The four finalists have been selected from a pool of about 25 applicants, according to UW Dean of Students Lori Berquam, who headed the Search and Screen Committee.
Making the list are Ferdinand Schlapper, Boise State University executive director of Health, Wellness and Counseling Services; Glenn Egelman, Bowling Green State University Student Health Service director and physician-in-chief; Dana Mills, Marquette University director of Student Health Service; and current UHS Director of Clinical Services Sarah Van Orman.
Berquam said the finalists were selected because of their experience working with students in the college health field, adding the position will be crucial because UHS will be going through changes this year.
“UHS will be moving into the new Student Activity Center in University Square,” Berquam said. “I think we’re hoping for individuals who are interested in many transitions. We need someone with some vision.”
According to Berquam, UHS should receive more foot traffic at its new, more central location on campus. She added there will be both counseling and medical services in the same building for the first time, and there will be great opportunities for the right director to take advantage of the opportunity to expand UHS.
Van Orman said the improvement of an organization should always be the goal of its director.
“Any medical service is always undergoing a continual process of change and evolution,” Van Orman said. “If you stop looking for ways to make it better, at that point the organization fails.”
According to Berquam, each candidate is scheduled to visit the UW campus and give presentations on the “Top Health Issues Facing College Students.”
She said the presentations will be a part of the interview process, and they will give the UW community a chance to see where the candidates are in terms of emerging health issues and how they would handle student concerns.
Berquam added it is vital for students to attend the presentations to provide feedback about what issues are important to them and that should be addressed by UHS. She said it is a great opportunity for students to give feedback about what should be offered by UHS, which is funded by student segregated fees.
The new executive director will replace Susan Crowley, who has been doing the job as interim director after Kathy Poi retired last year.
Berquam said Crowley did not want to have the position on a full-time basis. She added the final decision about the hiring will be made by the Chancellor’s Office.
UW Vice Chancellor of Administration Darrell Bazzell said the Chancellor’s Office expects the hiring process to conclude some time in May or June, so the new director will be ready for the next academic year.
