University of Wisconsin System?s Board of Regents will
discuss transcript policies within the system among many other issues at
today?s meeting on campus.
System President Kevin Reilly will report to the full board
on issues he would like to see the system consider as part of Advantage
Wisconsin, Board of Regents Vice President Charles Pruitt said.
Advantage Wisconsin is a plan for change throughout the UW
System to help ensure success for Wisconsin?s economy, residents and students.
The plan is comprised of seven core strategies, all represented by think tanks.
These think tanks are small groups with members across
campuses set up to address the main strategies of Advantage Wisconsin,
including preparing students, producing more graduates and creating higher-paying
jobs, working on operational excellence and collaboration and gaining
resources.
As a part of Advantage Wisconsin, Reilly will be proposing a
plan for dual transcripts for students systemwide. The plan would offer a
traditional transcript of the students? classes and grades earned in those
courses and a second transcript detailing the student?s extracurricular life.
?The second transcript will show what kind of person the
student is outside of the classroom,? UW System spokesperson David Giroux said.
?It will detail how involved the student was, their creative thinking,
leadership and extra curricula.?
If the Board of Regents approves the proposal, Wisconsin
will be the first state to offer dual transcripts across a system of schools.
According to Giroux, dual transcripts would help potential employers assess
students? work ethic and their involvement in a campus community.
?There will always be a place for traditional transcripts,
though,? Giroux said. ?People still want to know what kinds of courses you
took, what order you took them in and what kinds of grades you got in them,
especially when applying to grad school, or something along those lines.?
Giroux said Reilly will address about 10 new ideas for
Advantage Wisconsin for the regents to consider.
?[Advantage Wisconsin] will be one of the most important
parts of the meeting,? Pruitt said.
The Board of Regents will also conduct committee meetings to
discuss other important issues regarding the system.
?The salary ranges will be addressed by the Business and
Finance Committee and the Education Committee will discuss the approval of the
UW-Milwaukee Charter School,? Pruitt said.
The charter school is currently affiliated with the
Milwaukee school district, but would like approval to become a part of the UW
System, Pruitt said.
In addition to revising the salary ranges of the chancellors
at UW-Madison and several other UW institutions whose salaries are
significantly below those in their peer groups, the regents will review the
individual salaries of at least two chancellors.
The Board of Regents meeting will conclude Friday with
reports from each individual committee.
