A traveling art exhibition of postcards featuring anonymous secrets is in the middle of a visit to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point this week.
PostSecret is an exhibition of over 200 postcards collected by Frank Warren, an artist from Germantown, Md. Each postcard tells a secret the author has never shared with anyone.
"We all have secrets," Warren said in a press release. "(We have) fears, regrets, hopes, beliefs, fantasies, betrayals, humiliations."
Warren added people may not always recognize their secrets, and that everyone has the ability to discover, share and grow secrets into something "meaningful and beautiful."
PostSecret began when Warren left more than 3,000 printed postcards at various locations around the country including subway stations and libraries, asking people to share a secret and mail the postcard back to him.
Since his initial 3,000 postcards, Warren has received thousands of additional postcards from all over the world.
Caren Heft, director of the Edna Carlsten Gallery where the exhibit is on display in Stevens Point, said the university is excited to have the display on campus.
"We are thrilled to have an exhibit of this stature visit the university," Heft said. "Warren has some powerful things to say, and I hope students take advantage of seeing it."
Warren has already published one book featuring the various postcards and is in the process of writing another. He also keeps an online blog that is updated weekly with new postcards.
A portion of the profits from the books and other uses of the cards will go to the National Hopeline Network, a suicide prevention line that Warren says has helped him in the past.
The exhibit is featured at the Edna Carlsten Gallery at the UW-Stevens Point campus until November 22.
According to Chancellor Linda Bunnell, PostSecret is just one of the many good things happening currently at UW-Stevens Point.
"I'm proud to tell you that we offer our students many opportunities for leadership and service, but most importantly, we provide a supportive and lively environment for studying and learning," Bunnell said.
UW-Stevens Point, with 8,700 students, has four academic colleges with 100 program choices within nearly 50 majors. Special programs include theater and dance, athletic training and natural resources.
In addition, Bunnell said UW-Stevens Point is consistently named one of the top public Midwestern universities in U.S. News and World Report's college rankings.
The university also offers a unique, hands-on approach that is not used at all UW campuses, she added.
"Students enjoy not only stimulating classroom experiences but also classroom-related learning activities in business, education, the environment and the professions — otherwise known as service learning," Bunnell said.
The university also boasts the highest percentage of undergraduate courses taught by regular faculty in the UW System and a student-to-faculty ratio of 20-1.
The city of Stevens Point has also been ranked as one of the "Top 100 Places to Live" three of the last four years by Relocate-America.
