An alleged assault on the 200 block of King Street in downtown Madison led to an arrest Monday.
The assault occurred around 1 p.m., when the male suspect grabbed a woman from behind, assaulting her.
"He was forcibly grabbing her," Madison Police Sgt. John Patterson said. "Though I couldn't tell you what the assault entailed."
Patterson said officers responded to a call from a witness in the area, and arrested the man, who was still in the area when the police arrived.
Patterson did not know if the people involved in the incident are Madison residents or students from the University of Wisconsin.
Police are still trying to figure out formal charges, as the case is still pending.
While King Street has gained recent criticism from neighborhood residents for its nightlife — which has led to disturbances — the afternoon assault is "totally uncharacteristic," according to Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, who oversees King Street.
"It's unheard of, anywhere in the downtown, and certainly on King Street," he added. "You just never hear someone was assaulted in the middle of the day."
Patterson agreed with Verveer, noting most of the calls police receive about King Street occur mostly at night and during bar time, but said assaults can happen anytime during the day.
"Lots of the assaults that are reported are occurring at all different times of the day," Patterson remarked. "[But] it is rare to have something like this in a populated area."
