New website rates college bars nationwide

It’s no secret that college students like to slam a drink or five now and again.

Many University of Wisconsin students hit the bars with this idea in mind, whether using a real or an illegitimate form of identification.

Reflecting on this, two college students have just expanded the college bar scene. Brandon O’Brien and Eric Johney, both seniors majoring in computer graphics at Purdue University, created the website collegebarscene.com so students nationwide can share reviews of their favorite campus bars.

“We’d just like to get it to be a resource for nightlife at certain schools,” O’Brien said, adding that many students like to check out the bar scene at different colleges.

The site offers students the opportunity to discover what fellow classmates thought of the bars on campuses nationwide.

“Whether you’re just turning 21 and don’t know anything about the bars on your campus or you’re the local drunk, this site will give you the opportunity to learn more about the bars and bar scene around your campus,” states the website, which lists the top 10 most popular college bars nationwide, based on user responses.

Students can rate bars and leave comments. Ratings are based on aspects such as affordability, smoke level and how attractive a bar’s patrons are, from “everyone’s sexy” to “fugly.” A bar’s overall rating ranges from “excellent” to “sucks.”

“You can do an advanced search by school or zip code,” O’Brien said. “The site gives a list of each school’s bars, their addresses, phone numbers, web links if they have them and descriptions, comments and ratings.”

Currently, the No. 1 bar on the site is the Ruby Room, located in Houston, Texas.

Users need not be fearful of giving their e-mail addresses because the site promises not to distribute personal information.

“You have to be a member, but it’s free,” O’Brien said. “The site will ask for your ID, password and e-mail.”

O’Brien said Johney and himself created the site when they noticed there were no such resources available on the web. Response at Purdue, he said, has been positive.

“We have pretty much all the bars from Purdue,” O’Brien said, adding that the site is still in its early stages.

Students can use the site to hold “forums” with other students, with discussion topics ranging from bars, drinks, food and college sports to drunken ramblings.

“Did you see something crazy happen while you were out drinking? Were you on the receiving end of some drunken story? Share it with us here,” the site advises students under the drunken ramblings category.

Those looking for new drink ideas can visit the site’s “Mixed Drinks” section, which lists the 10 most popular drinks according to users.

Nick Pazour, a manager at the Kollege Klub in Madison and a UW junior, said although he was not familiar with the website, it sounded like a good idea.

“I think it could work,” he said.

He added that college students usually consider location, atmosphere, drink specials and the crowd a bar tends to attract when deciding where to spend the evening.

“[At the KK] we get a lot of fraternities and sororities,” Pazour said.

He said UW students would likely find the website appealing and added that he expects the KK to get good reviews as the site acquires UW users.

“We have some pretty good-looking people who come here,” he added.
