A nine-hour standoff resulted in one dead and two injured at Dyersburg Community College in western Tennessee Wednesday evening after a hostage situation ended violently.
Gunman Harold Kilpatrick Jr., 26, took hostage a college class of approximately 15 people, including the teacher, around 1 p.m. but soon released an estimated three of those individuals. The students were being held in a second-floor classroom. The rest of the floor was quickly evacuated after word spread of the hostage situation.
Kilpatrick had an apparent plan to shoot someone and then turn the gun on himself. Students reported to police that the man was clearly suicidal. He was due in court Wednesday in Memphis due to a prior assault on his girlfriend.
He began shooting in the classroom, which led police to break in and fire, killing Kilpatrick and leaving two injured. However, it remains unclear whether the hostages were injured from police firing or Kilpatrick’s shots. Neither suffered life-threatening injuries.
According to police, they were waiting outside the door to ensure the safety of the students before going in the classroom.
Kilpatrick, a Memphis native, had been residing with his sister in Dyersburg and had no affiliation to the college. Early in the afternoon, he refused to talk to police and negotiate and in turn, used hostages and their cell phones as a means to communicate with authorities.
Police also said the man had claimed to be a member of al Qaeda. The FBI was informed of the claim and soon joined police at the scene even though police dismissed Kilpatrick’s membership claims.
