The owner of Bullfeathers Pub and Eatery agreed to pay a fine of over $1,500 for five underage drinking citations in the bar.
Bullfeathers owner and Alcohol Licensing and Review Committee member Dick Lyshek exchanged his seat on the ALRC jury to take the stand at Wednesday night’s meeting, facing a “formal expression of concern” from the committee.
Lyshek offered to answer questions at the meeting, but no committee members asked him anything about the incident. In response, Lyshek said he hoped the city would seriously address the issue in the future.
“Students are going to drink no matter what, and it’s always an ongoing problem,” Lyshek said.
He said the city should reconsider its allocation of police resources to fight underage drinking, especially when most students do not drive anywhere.
In other business, the owner of Hawk’s on State Street requested an extension of the restaurant’s hours to bar time in order to boost his profits, despite a recommendation from the police department that he remain open only until 1 a.m.
Sgt. Emil Quast said the saturation of bars downtown is too great to bear another addition. He said owner Hawk Schenkel never submitted proof of his employee training and that he failed to contact the police department after eight noise complaints.
Schenkel said he should be granted an extra hour of bar service because he does not pander to the college bar scene.
“I built a place that does not cater to college kids, so I don’t see my place being a problem,” he said.
The ALRC moved to reconsider Schenkel’s request in three months.
