A UW-Milwaukee student is one of six candidates running for Milwaukee County Executive today.

Timothy Webber spent Monday campaigning at his school and Marquette University.

“It’s going really well,” Webber told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “We’re campaigning really hard, reaching a lot of people.”

Webber is hoping to fill the vacancy left by F. Thomas Ament, who had the job for 10 years. Ament retired in February after becoming the subject of a recall campaign prompted by his approval of pension changes under which he and other high-ranking county officials would have received million-dollar payouts.

The other candidates are state Rep. Scott Walker; Tyrone P. Dumas, director of trade and technical education for Milwaukee Public Schools; Victor Huyke, owner of the weekly newspaper El Conquistador; Milwaukee alderman Tom Nardelli; and Jim Ryan, Hales Corners Village President.

The candidates have emphasized the need for county government reform.

The top two vote-getters from this race will advance to the general election April 30. The winner will complete Ament’s four-year term, which ends in 2004.
