Governor Doyle’s veto of the regent bill is not an effort to ensure a UW system/state wide focus among citizen regents. It is an effort to maintain cronyism on the board. If seven plus one equals eight, and thus, the balance in favor of Milwaukee and Madison areas that currently defines the membership of the board of regents can persist. Having seven geographically diverse regents wouldn’t result in a geographic divide among regents. The real issue that Doyle sees is an inability to have the board of regents pander to his whim. Infamous for raiding the UW system’s budget, Doyle wants to ensure executive privilege to appoint friends in high places to the board to rubber stamp gubernatorial decisions in regards to higher education in the state.
