In the early years of the twentieth century, The Red Gym was a dominant local landmark and a thriving center of student activity. Opened in 1894 as an armory as well as a replacement for an aging and outdated gymnasium, the building housed a gun room and ammunition storage facility, a bowling alley, a swimming pool, a basketball court and two rifle ranges, among other attractions. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1993, the building now hosts a variety of student services offices as well and further administrative space.
