A concerted effort: Matt and Kim

One of the most anticipated Wisconsin Union Directorate performances this year is taking place on Saturday, as Brooklyn dance duo Matt & Kim makes its way to Club 770 in Union South.

After releasing their freshman effort iheartcomix in 2006, the poppy East coast sensation is debuting its second album this January.

“What we got to do on this recording was what we’ve always wanted to do but never had the time or means,” band member Matt Johnson said of the album. “While it is a bit different, I really think this is what Matt & Kim was always meant to be.”

Having met in 2004, Johnson has since worked with Kim Schifino to perfect their joyful amalgamation of guitar, keys and percussion. Inherent in their tunes is a delightful appreciation for rhythm and an insatiable invitation to dance. “Daylight,” one of their recently released singles that is nearing a million plays on their MySpace page, is a lively, inspired set of lyrics that tells a story of youthful enthusiasm music fans of every background can appreciate. Performing at Lollapalooza has also established them as an authority on exciting sounds and genuine performances.

Their creative, poppy presence is something that transcends an indie-rock audience searching for the next ironic or Pitchfork-approved obsession. Indeed, other artists such as Chicago’s most forward-thinking DJ twosome, Flosstradamus, have remixed Matt & Kim’s “Yea Yeah” much to the approval of club attendees and general indie fans alike.

And the band is also focused on this, reaching out to people who aren’t interested in simply standing around with their arms folded.

“We like a crowd that wants to come out and have fun and dance.”

Given their mature, bouncy sound and widespread appeal, the show will assuredly approach the club-like atmosphere in Madison previously achieved by artists like Girl Talk or Kid Sister.

Opening for Matt & Kim will be both Texan couple Best Fwends as well as the Minneapolis-based group Best Friends Forever. Best Fwends’ electronic mash-ups and similarly infectious tempo will gleefully contribute to the party while Best Friends Forever will provide a powerful, girly nuance to the evening’s high-powered festivities.

Admission to this concert is free. Doors open at 9 p.m.
