Orpheum Theatre goes high fashion

While watching episode two, season four of "Sex and the City" (you know, the one where Carrie becomes a fashion show model?), I couldn't help but wonder: What is it about fashion shows that make them so alluring? I mean, I know there were tears in your eyes when the season finale of "Project Runway" aired and punk fashionista Jeffrey Sebelia was crowned the champion. Honestly, what were you going to do with your Wednesday nights? Sure, it was fun watching all the drama play out leading up to the runway, but the thing that really kept us watching was that final catwalk at the end of every episode. Seeing the different looks glide down was simply memorizing. Well, I don't know what to do about your Wednesday nights, but fear not fashion mavens! In addition to the piles of books you're sure to be burying your nose in, this week marks the return of the runway.

The Victoria Secret fashion show started off the week last night, featuring the gorgeous Adriana and Gisele (among others) strutting their stuff in nearly nothing to the melodic voice of Mr. "Sexy Back" himself, Justin Timberlake. If that wasn't enough pizzazz to put you back on the road to runway, just wait for what's coming next. Wish you could have been front row at Battery Park this past fall under those legendary tents? Well, good news Madison faithful, this Saturday night the UW's own, Textile and Apparel Student Association (TASA), is bringing the runway to Madison. The Orpheum Theatre, which held hundreds of partygoers this past Halloween, is about to play host to the catwalk as well.

The show will be fully equipped with a DJ, female and male models, the season's hottest looks, and energy so intense it will have you thanking your lucky stars for the return of the runway! The party at the Orpheum doesn't end when the white lights go down on the runway. Like true fashion displays from New York to Milan, the Madison venue will also stay lively for an after-party.

TASA's "Couture Night" is so much more than just fabulously fashionable festivities — the cause is almost as great as the show itself. This time around the profits will go toward holding the final show, which will feature completely original designs and executions by TASA members. (Move over Victoria Secret and "Project Runway," because TASA's final exhibition in May is a lingerie show.) The fundraiser show Saturday night (doors open at 9:30 p.m., show starts at 10 p.m., with a $5 entrance fee) will feature outfits by various stylish Madison boutiques including: Bop, Up Spatique, Bodacious Boutique and Context.

There will also be a raffle held post-runway and pre-after party giving away gift certificates to be used at the show's featured stores. With finals fast approaching and only two weekends left, this weekend may be one of the last occasions to have a truly amazing time — and when TASA and the Orpheum pair up, there is sure to be one hell of a Saturday night! Plus, I can't imagine that anyone would want to miss what is sure to be the fashion party of the season. So while they may only be able to spin Mr. Timberlake on the turntables, TASA is sure to bring sexy back this Saturday night.
