Eleven people were injured Saturday morning when a taxicab jumped a curb outside of Camp Randall Stadium. According to the Madison Police Department, at approximately 10:26 a.m. a cab that had stopped to let out a passenger lurched forward onto a sidewalk near the intersection of University Ave. and Breeze Terrace.
The cab struck numerous pedestrians but none were seriously injured.
The accident occurred as large crowds were making their way to the stadium for the 11 a.m. Badger football game against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Madison Metro buses were also unloading passengers in the area. According to the MPD, the victims were transported to all three local hospitals. None of the injuries were reported to be life threatening, and the hospitals released most of the victims.
Police have not yet determined if charges will be filed against the cab driver. The department will be conducting an investigation into the incident.
Madison Police Lt. Ross Fleming told the Wisconsin State Journal that some reports indicate the cab driver appeared to be turned around in his seat prior to the accident. This information will be included in the police investigation.
“We don’t know for sure what happened,” Fleming said.
