We’ve been wondering
when a point to this dragged-on plot line would begin to show up. And tonight it
did. For a memory refresher: when the series first began, everyone knew of
Serena’s scandalous adventures that drove her out of New York just before her
senior year of high school. Now, less than three years later, we see a strong
parallel. It appears that, although not everyone is trying to ruin Serena, the
odds are very much against her. Tonight proved to us that simply by having
three copies of the same gown, a mask, and curly, golden locks, one of
Manhattan’s most prominent socialites can be brought down to rock bottom.
Just when Serena
thought her fiasco with Colin was over, she finds out that “half of New York,”
as Lily says, has found out as well. Columbia wants her out, but Lily works her
magic to prevent this from happening. But remember that we left off last week
with Juliet requesting that Jenny Humphrey team up with her and Vanessa against
Serena. Lily wants to make peace with Juliet, but Juliet only reveals more of
Serena’s dirty secrets to her own mother. We find out later that Juliet has
received a fat check from Lily in order to keep these secrets to herself.
While Juliet is
scheming to completely and utterly destroy Serena, S is dealing with her life
on a more personal scale: deciding which boy to choose. She cannot decide
between Dan and Nate, treating this problem as if everyone is dealing with it.
The team of Juliet, Vanessa, and Jenny knows this, and find a way to use it to
their advantage through messing with Serena’s cell phone.
Blair and Chuck now
each have their reasons to avoid being together. Blair is being offered some
spot in a club dealing with women in power, but she will not be given the spot
if she stays with Chuck, due to how much public attention their relationship
has garnered. Chuck’s having some issues creating the sinful image of the
Empire that he has always desired due to his being in love. They each
acknowledge this to one another and recognize that they cannot be together, but
Chuck blows it and unexpectedly admits his love for Blair during an intimate
moment.
Here begins the
episode’s major drama. At a masquerade ball, Jenny and Juliet both dress just
like Serena in the same dress and the same mask. They both enter the ball
before Serena, leaving her out of luck when the bouncer sees that her name has
already been checked off the guest list. Juliet handles Dan and Nate, by
kissing both of them behind the mask, leading each of them to believe that
Serena did this. Jenny handles Chuck and Blair, by attempting to expose their
love to all of the ball’s guests. At this point, they both realize what is
truly important, and exhibit a dramatic, romantic kiss for everyone to see.
Blair is denied the spot in the club, but she doesn’t care.
However, once they
are finally together and (comparatively) happy, they decide that this is not
the right time to be together. Blair explains that she would prefer to create
herself in the world first, under her own name, and not just be known as Chuck
Bass’ girlfriend.
We are left tonight
with Serena being at perhaps the lowest point that we have ever seen her. Dan
and Nate don’t care about her anymore. Blair is convinced that Serena was the
one trying to expose her and Chuck and ruining her chances at being in the
club. Juliet has one last action in her. She drugs Serena, takes her away in a
taxi, contacts the Dean of Columbia from Serena’s phone explaining that she
wishes to withdraw, and keeps the unconscious Serena overnight.
It would be a little
drastic to send Serena away from the city again, but the premise is,
essentially, the same as what happened to her in high school. It’ll be
interesting to see what happens when Serena wakes up and realizes how torn
apart her life has become as a result of one night’s actions.
