After receiving a
million dollar grant for the trauma program, Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) put
the residents through a trauma certification program that is pushes residents
to their limits. Dr. April Kepner (Sarah Drew), Dr. Alex Karev (Justin
Chambers), and Dr. Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) compete together to keep
their “patients”, actually dummies, alive the longest. Through rain and
frustration, they work to stand as the remaining team. When Avery abandons the
team out of frustration, Karev and Kepner put forth all efforts to win the
competition. Audiences even see an eccentric side of Kepner when she decides to
end the competition by taking the fake patients to an operating room, forcing
Hunt to name her and Karev the winners and both their trauma licenses.
Both Dr. Arizona
Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) and Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) are packing up
their apartment to prepare for their trip to Africa. However, Callie begins to
question her decision as they are packing up their apartment and saying
good-bye to their friends. Dr.
Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) does not help her situation by riding her
with guilt about the plans he had for her future. At the airport, Arizona can
not stand Callie’s complaining any longer and wants to travel to Africa alone,
and by boarding the plane, ends her relationship with Callie.
Dr. Mark Sloan (Eric
Dane) and Dr. Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) are working together again to give a
woman, in her own words, “more junk in her trunk.” As the two begin to work
together, some flirting arises between the two characters, an interaction
audiences have not seen for some time. Meanwhile, Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra
Wilson) performs an autopsy of previous patient, Mary Potrman (Mandy Moore),
only to discover after searching the body, the death will remain a medical
mystery. Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) researches Alzheimer’s to form a
grant proposal for further research on the disease, fearing Dr. Meredith Grey
(Ellen Pompeo) may have her mother’s genes.
As audiences have
noticed over the last couple of episodes, Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) is
struggling to regain confidence after the shootings. Cristina explains that she
blames Meredith for all her struggles after Meredith had begged her to operate
on Derek after he had been shot. Cristina is put to the test when Dr. Teddy
Altman (Kim Raver) leaves to go pick up lungs for a patient. When this specific
patient begins to code, his life is in the hands of Cristina. After saving the
patient Cristina proves she has the ability to operate, but she would rather
not work out of fear. She puts all work to a halt when she quits her job as
a surgeon.
Next week a lot of
questions that arose during this episode will be answered. Is Arizona
officially gone forever? How will this impact Callie? Were there some sparks
between Karev and Kepner when they won the trauma competition? Are Mark and
Lexie on the verge of becoming a couple again? Most importantly, what will
happen to Cristina now that she is no longer a surgeon? Will her friends and
fellow surgeons be able to convince her to return?
