In last night’s
episode of Glee, the club was short one member after Noah Puckerman (Mark
Salling) was sent to juvenile detention. However, the club gains one new member
when Sam Evans (Chad Overstreet) joins the club in time for a duets competition
among all the members of the club. The winning performance earns a paid for
dinner at Breadsticks, a popular restaurant among the McKinley students.

           When
Sam joins, Kurt (Chris Colfer) believes his wolf pack has grown by one, and
asks Sam to compete with him in the duets competition. However, his plan is
quickly foiled by Finn (Cory Monteith) who worries that Sam will want to quit
the club following the taunting and teasing he would receive from singing with
Kurt. Although frustrated that he continually finds himself alone, Kurt
performs “Le Jazz Hot” from the musical Victor/Victoria, which embraces aspects
of males and females 

           Finn
and Rachel (Lea Michele) prepare Elton John’s “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” and
although confident they will win the competition, decide it would be best to
boost Sam’s confidence and plan on trying to favor the competition in his odds 

           The
duets competition becomes the primary concern for all the glee club members.
Santana, determined to win that dinner, recruits Mercedes (Amber Riley) as her
partner and the two perform an upbeat rendition of Ike and Tina Turner’s “River
Deep — Mountain High.” Frustrated that Santana refuses to recognize their
relationship, Brittany (Heather Morris) forms a partnership with Artie (Kevin
McHale) eventually leading to Artie losing his virginity. However, when Artie
realizes he is being used, he breaks off their relationship and neither
participate in the competition.

           Meanwhile,
Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) works hard to persuade her boyfriend Mike Chang (Harry
Shum Jr.) that he can not only dance during their performance but must take a
risk and sing. As such, the couple performs A
Chorus Line’s, “Sing!” For the first time, we can see the talent of Mike
Chang’s singing as well as his dance moves.

           Rachel
and Finn decide to perform a bad and offensive song, singing the Motown song,
“With You I’m Born Again.” During their performance they dress as a nun and
priest and are able to offend many of the members allowing them to lose the
competition. From there, they help create a relationship between Quinn (Dianna
Agron) and Sam. These two then, as Santana puts it, charmingly perform Jason
Mraz and Colbie Caillat’s, “Lucky.”

           After
the competition is over and all the couples and Kurt have performed, the winner
is put to a vote. Although most people vote for themselves, due to the concerns
of Finn and Rachel, Quinn and Sam win the competition. The winners go to the
restaurant and although at first hesitant and unsure of Sam’s actions, Quinn
decides that the outing is a date, and the two become a couple.

           Meanwhile,
Rachel, in her streak of niceness, notes that Kurt is often alone and feels
unappreciated. She then takes the time to recognize his wonderful voice and
helps him understand how much the club appreciates him. She also invites him to
sing a duet with her, just for the purpose of singing. The two conclude the
episode singing a mash-up of Milton Ager’s “Happy Days are Here Again” and
Harold Arlen’s “Get Happy.”

           This
particular episode was very enjoyable for it allowed us to hear voices not
normally heard. All the characters gained appreciation of each other for just
being who they are. The final performance between Rachel and Kurt is also interesting
because they were the two characters from the club who were nominated for an
Emmy, so it was interesting to hear their voices combined in a great
performance.
