Being from New York and a senior, it was not until this semester that I consumed what I consider a "legit bagel" in Madison. I try my best to avoid the chains' rolls with a hole as much as possible, unless, of course, I need something to soak up the alcohol from the night before.
Gotham Bagels is a great addition to Madison. Owned by a man from Long Island, N.Y., Gotham Bagels are delicious, firm, filling and truly toasted (not microwaved). Virtually every type of bagel conceivable is available, with a large variety of cream cheeses.
To continue with the New York deli theme, Gotham Bagels has delicious matzo ball soup, Dr. Brown's sodas, and smoked salmon and Pastrami sandwiches. Sandwiches average around $8. The locale even has egg sandwiches made on the grill for less than $5.
Gotham Bagels has indoor and outdoor seating. It is a quaint, comfortable environment. If you want to read a book, eat a bagel and drink a coffee, you can snuggle up on their comfortable cushioned chairs. The high-rise and low-rise tables can accommodate you and your friends for breakfast or lunch. It is usually not too crowded and not noisy, and the restaurant attracts everyone from students to businessmen.
Take a walk up to Gotham while it's still warm and enjoy a delicious New York bagel. You may want to bring a few extra home to keep you satisfied for the week. So the next time you want to make fun of a Coastie, go to Gotham, eat a delicious bagel and perhaps you'll reconsider your opinion.
