A popular website for University of Wisconsin students who are currently scheduling classes added another feature to last week. Pick-A-Prof.com announced its collaboration with Facebook, the popular social networking site. The partnership will allow students to see who will be in each class before they even add it to their schedule.
According to Karen Bragg, director of university relations for Pick-A-Prof.com, the new tool is an addition to features already available at Pick-A-Prof.com including professor reviews, grade histories and a scheduling tool.
"Studies have shown that students who take classes and study with their friends get better grades," Bragg said. "With Pick-A-Prof's partnership with Facebook, students can choose which friends to share their class schedules with."
Bragg added that students are required to obtain the consent of their friends in order to attain their schedules — this works by using the "share" option on Facebook.
However, UW students have mixed feelings about being able to schedule classes with friends.
Junior Kevin Olikara thinks that the Pick-A-Prof.com collaboration with Facebook is beneficial since he can have people to study with.
"I'm an engineering major, so I have a pretty set curriculum to follow each semester," Olikara said. "It would be nice to have the same people in each class to study with."
However, sophomore Kevin Weiss is less enthusiastic about the social aspect of picking his classes. He said there are more important aspects to picking a class.
"It would be nice to have friends in my classes, but that's not the most important criteria in choosing a class," Weiss said. "I would much rather have a good professor and convenient class time."
Pick-A-Prof.com is not the only site available to students who wish to see student reviews of professors. Its rival, RateMyProfessors.com offers many of the same services as Pick-A-Prof.com does, but claims to be the better and more accurate of the two sites.
RateMyProfessors.com offers pictures of each professor and gives students the option of choosing professors based on a whether they are attractive or not.
Pick-A-Prof.com boasts more than 11 million professor reviews while RateMyProfessors.com has just more than six million.
