Although a formal request to speak has yet to arrive at Van Hise Hall as of late Wednesday, the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents is prepared to accommodate state Rep. Scott Suder, R-Abbotsford, or one of his colleagues at the monthly board meeting today or Friday.
Suder reiterated Wednesday the odds are "good" that he, one of his colleagues, or a delegate of his interests will attempt to speak before the regents regarding a new investigation into the Paul Barrows scandal and their requested discipline of UW System President Kevin Reilly.
"I would go out of my way to provide them with a forum to speak because I think that it's the polite thing to do," Regent President David Walsh said. "We'd like to hear from them."
Because no formal requests to speak have been submitted, UW System spokesperson Doug Bradley said any last minute accommodations would be made only at Walsh's discretion.
"I have not heard of a formal request to speak," Bradley said. "These meetings get to be sort of difficult to choreograph [so if] somebody comes in the midst of a presentation — that might not be the right place to insert a comment."
After their requests were dismissed by Walsh last week, Suder, as well as Reps. Rob Kreibich, R-Eau Claire, and Steve Nass, R-Whitewater, criticized the regent president for responding before consulting with the full board.
Since that date Suder has vowed on a number of occasions the triumvirate will try its best to send someone to plead their case before the full board.
"We're going to either have one of the representatives or [have] part of our legislative team go," Suder said. "I think the system is aware we're interested and once we find out who is going, we'll certainly alert them."
Suder's request stems from comments Reilly made to the Wisconsin State Journal early last week revealing his early knowledge of the Barrows scandal. According to Suder, Kreibich and Nass, this new information warrants a more thorough internal investigation and discipline against the system president.
