Police arrested 13 rave-goers at the Alliant Energy Center over the weekend, 10 of whom were arrested on drug charges.
Six people were charged with possession of marijuana, two with possession of ketamine and an animal tranquilizer, and one was charged with possession of Ecstasy with the intent to deliver.
A 20-year-old man was transported to an area hospital for a drug overdose. He reportedly told police he had taken Ecstasy and psilocybin mushrooms, but toxicology tests showed he had cocaine, amphetamines and marijuana in his system, sources said. He was later charged with possession of Ecstasy, which officials found in his pockets. It has not been confirmed whether the man attends UW-Madison.
Police made three other arrests at the event on charges of disorderly conduct.
The event, called Psychosis 2002, was staged by Milwaukee-based Plantations Productions and was attended by about 2,500 people.
Lt. Tim Ritter of the Dane County Sheriff’s Office did not return phone calls Monday but told the Capital Times those arrested ranged in age from 17 to 30, with most in their early 20s.
“The number of arrests are only limited by the number of people we have there,” Ritter said. “Security does a good job. They do everything they can, but you can only work within the boundaries.”
Ted Ballweg, Alliant assistant manager for sales and marketing, told the Capital Times the techno dance parties held at the establishment are known as a safe alternative to other illegal events or activities.
“We’re sending the message pretty clearly that music is fine, drugs are not,” he said.
He said security personnel do a good job of not allowing drugs within the building, though Ritter said the 20-year-old who suffered the overdose was found with Ecstasy in his pocket while inside the event.
