On Sunday afternoon, the No. 7 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team upset the No. 1 University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association title game.
It didn’t help the Badgers that the WCHA Final Face-Off was held in Minneapolis.
On their way to the conference championship game, the Badgers beat Bemidji State University with ease in a 4-1 warm-up.
Going into Sunday’s match against Minnesota, Wisconsin had won all four games between the two conference foes this season. Though judging by the single goal margin separating the teams in each game, it isn’t at all shocking that something had to give.
Women’s Hockey: Roque, Campbell named WCHA Players of the Year
The Badgers fell behind early, but on the strength of freshman Delaney Drake’s first career goal, the first period ended with the score knotted at one.
Minnesota’s Taylor Williamson managed to sneak the puck past WCHA Goaltender of the Year Kristen Campbell in the middle period for what would prove to be the game-winner en route to a 3-1 Minnesota title grab.
Wisconsin out-shot Minnesota 32-24 in the game, despite only converting on a single goal.
As luck would have it, the Badgers will have a chance to give the Gophers a taste of their own medicine Saturday in Madison for the NCAA quarterfinals.
