UW carries energy on road

[media-credit name=’DEREK MONTGOMERY/Herald photo’ align=’alignnone’ width=’648′]msoccer7_dm416[/media-credit]With the weight of a seven-game losing streak lifted off its shoulders, the Wisconsin men's soccer team looks to take its newfound momentum with it on the road when it takes on Michigan Sunday.

The Badgers snapped their skid Wednesday night with a 3-0 victory over Marquette, but to the team, that was just the first step toward succeeding at a lofty goal they set for the remainder of this season — to win all of their remaining games.

"They are excited — they want to close the season on a great winning streak and get into the Big Ten tournament [with a 9-9 record] and I think one of the things they feel is that we can play with any team in the conference. They feel good about what they are capable of doing," head coach Jeff Rohrman said.

The Badgers could have just as easily have lay down and given up for the rest of the season after the losing streak, but they did anything but that.

"[Sometimes] there is a tendency to pack up the tent and not get after [it] the way you want them too, but these guys haven't quit," Rohrman said.

In breaking out of their funk, the Badgers also scored three goals in a game for the first time this season. After scoring just one goal in the previous five games leading up to the contest with Indiana, the team has scored five in its last two matches.

"I think now we just realize there's not much of the season left. We had a bad stretch and we got a little bit unlucky, but we realize we need to win some games," captain Aaron Hohlbein said.

Two of those five goals have come from penalty kicks, which Wisconsin has become more accustomed to as of late.

Freshman Victor Diaz hit from the penalty spot both times, and is one of a few Badger players who are capable of making penalty kicks happen.

"We've got some guys who are pretty good in one-on-one situations, so that's something that we have to continue to do well," Rohrman said.

With the scoring questions being answered, or at least in the process of being answered, one new question facing the Badgers is who will be at goalkeeper.

Rohrman gave sophomore Mike Hood just his second start of the season in place of Jake Settle — Hood's only other start came when Settle was recovering from a concussion — and the head coach did not rule out giving Hood another chance at Michigan.

"It'll be up in the air — I'm not going to commit either way," Rohrman said. "There are things that Mike brings that maybe Jake isn't as strong in, but Jake is maybe a more complete goaltender than Mike."

Michigan will be just as hungry as Wisconsin. The Wolverines take on UW-Milwaukee Friday night looking to snap a three-game slide of their own, before taking on the Badgers.

The Wolverines, led by Trai Blanks and Ryan Alexander — each player has three goals and one assist — will be looking for their second conference victory of the year, while the Badgers will be looking for their first Big Ten win.

For the Badgers to achieve their goal of winning out the season, they would have to beat Michigan, Michigan State, UW-Green Bay and Northwestern.

"We finally snapped a streak of seven," forward Christopher Ede said. "We made it a goal to win out and I think we're on the right track right now. We've got to keep it going in the Big Ten though."
