Badger athletes earn All-Big Ten honors

It was an impressive weekend for UW sports as the men’s basketball team won its own NABC tournament and the volleyball team swept Illinois and Purdue. The Big Ten recognized these performances by naming both senior guard Kirk Penney and junior setter Morgan Shields as Big Ten Player of the Week in their respective sports.

In receiving this honor, Penney earned his fourth Big Ten Player of the Week honor, which set a UW school record. Last year Penney tied the Badger record of Big Ten honors with three, sharing the honor with former Badger great and current Dallas Maverick star Michael Finely.

Penney started his blistering weekend going for 25 points against Eastern Washington on 5-for-6 three-point shooting. He also chipped in a team-leading seven rebounds. In the championship game of the NABC tournament, Penney once again led the team in scoring with 19 points.

After going 6-10 from the three-point range and 14-28 from the field, the senior was also named to the NABC Classic All-Tournament Team.

Also turning in a dominating performance this weekend, Shields earned her second Big Ten Player of the Week honor; her first was Sept. 9 of this year.

The setter recorded 88 total assists, averaging 14.67 assists per game in the team’s sweeps of Illinois and Purdue. Her balanced distribution of the ball allowed four Badger hitters to reach double figures in kills against Illinois.

“I thought Morgan [Shields] did a great job of dispersing the ball, getting four players in double-digit kills, especially the way she went after the middles,” Waite said. “It was really assertive, and I think it just loosened everything up along the net for us.”

Not only did Shields loosen up the pressure along the net, but the junior also did some damage of her own at the net, adding nine kills on the weekend, which is impressive for a setter. Even more impressive was Shield’s commanding kill down the left sideline to end game number one against Purdue.
