Herald, campus must rein in Shout Out insensitivity

To the editor:

I wouldn’t normally do this, because I’m all for students being able to express themselves, but there was a SO I read from May 7, 2010, that I felt was extremely inappropriate, sexist and should not have been posted:

“ASO to all the slutty girls that bang dozens of guys and then decide they want a nice boy to take them out on a date. Sorry ladies, we don’t want your used up, stretched out cooters. I’ll take the girl who waits to slut it up til we’re dating, thanks.”

Obviously, I read the Shout Outs. I expect a college newspaper to have sexual content, and I generally enjoy the witty comments made by my fellow Badgers. However, someone needs to be drawing the line somewhere. Not only is the writer who either actually holds this opinion, just wanted to write something outrageous to get a SO online, or both, to blame, but so is the staff member who allowed this on a website that a huge portion of UW’s campus reads. First of all, why is it that a man can have sex with a different girl every night and it’s socially acceptable, but it isn’t OK for a woman to behave similarly? Am I not allowed to take pleasure in having sex and hooking up? Second of all, the language used in this SO is incredibly vulgar. I simply do not need some guy telling me that my “cooter” is “used up and stretched out” because I have sex. I understand that The Badger Herald wants to engage and entertain its readers, but by posting this SO, you have supported the notion that women are “sluts” when they “bang” guys, while men are manly, cool, and even get their degrading comments posted for the entire campus to see. Do you really think that’s OK? Please just don’t post things like this. It’s really not funny, and it does more harm than good. Be a little more sensitive. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Mary Martinco
