County board elections deserve student attention, participation

Editor’s note: Adam Johnson is the Chair of ASM’s Legislative Affairs committee.

ASM’s Legislative Affairs Committee, in conjunction with the Union’s Society and Politics committee, WSUM student radio, the Daily Cardinal and The Badger Herald, are sponsoring a debate for your viewing pleasure March 22 at 7 p.m. in 1101 Humanities. This debate will be between Michael Johnson and Analiese Eicher, the two candidates for the District 5 Dane County Board seat.

I strongly urge all students to attend this event, as it is one of the few chances where students can really get to know the candidates before voting for them in the election. While some dismiss the County Board as useless, I feel it is imperative that we pay attention to one of two student public offices in our area! (The other being City Aldermanic District 8, currently held by Bryon Eagon.) This position is one of the most powerful positions a student can hold in the area and has direct control over a number of issues, including taxes.

Additionally, the Dane County Board has served as a political launch pad the past few decades with both current Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin and State Senator Mark Pocan having served terms on the County Board. Could Michael or Analiese be the next state or federal senator or representative? If they are, wouldn’t you like to see them now and be able to tell your grandchildren that you saw them speak on campus before they were big?

Again, this debate is Monday, March 22 at 7 p.m. in 1101 Humanities. I strongly encourage anyone with the slightest interest in the impending election to come check it out.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Adam Johnson ([email protected]) is a sophomore majoring in international studies and political science.
